Why light-based hair reduction is measured in sessions, not a single visit

If you have booked hair reduction hoping one session will settle it, the reason it does not work that way sits in how your hair actually grows.

Why one session is never the whole story

Your hair does not all grow on the same schedule. At any given moment, only some of the hairs in an area are in their active growth phase, while others are resting or about to shed. Light-based hair reduction, including IPL hair reduction, works on hairs that are actively growing - so a single visit only ever treats the portion of hairs in that phase on the day.

That is the honest reason a course is needed. Sessions are spaced out so that, over time, more hairs are caught while they are growing. It is not about adding visits for the sake of it - it is simply how the hair cycle works.

Why we say reduction, not removal

The proper term is permanent hair reduction, and the wording is deliberate. Over a considered course, the aim is fewer, finer and lighter hairs in the treated area - a genuine reduction rather than a promise that every hair is gone forever. Being clear about that from the start is part of how we work.

What helps between sessions

If you want the treatment to have the best chance, avoid plucking, waxing or threading the area between visits. Those methods pull the hair out at the root, which is exactly what the light needs to be present to work on. Shaving is fine, because it leaves the hair in place below the surface.

Brenda has cared for skin in Perth for over 25 years, and she talks you through what a course can and cannot realistically do before you begin.

If unwanted facial or body hair is something you would like to look at properly, the clearest first step is a considered conversation about your skin and your hair.
